Born in Manhattan, United States, Daniel Celentano was the son of Italian immigrants. Following a childhood polio attack that left him with partial use of his right leg, he was tutored at home by art teachers. Through perseverance, he regained control over his leg by age twelve, at which time he became the first pupil of the social realist painter Thomas Hart Benton. His formal training included studies at the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusetts, the New York School of Fine And Applied Art in Greenwich Village, and the National Academy of Design in New York's Upper East Side.
Celentano was an American Scene artist who focused on realistic paintings of everyday life in New York, particularly within the Italian neighborhood of East Harlem. His work often depicted the humble domestic life and the vibrant characters of Manhattan's ethnic street life. Notable works include:
During the Great Depression, Celentano participated in New Deal art projects, working as a mural painter for the Federal Art Project and the Section of Painting and Sculpture. His mural commissions included works for the Queens General Hospital, the Flushing branch of the Queens Borough Public Library, and several high schools in Queens. During World War II, he worked in the art department of the Grumman Aircraft Corporation, where he created the mural The Flight of Man.
His paintings were exhibited in numerous cities and museums, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Whitney Museum. His first one-man show took place at the Walker Gallery in 1939. Throughout his career, his art was recognized by critics and institutions, leading to sales by the Carnegie Institute and the Art Institute of Chicago.
