Born in Berlin, Germany, Max Ackermann began his creative journey by carving wooden figures and modeling ornaments in his father's studio. His formal training took him through several significant institutions, including studying under Henry van de Velde in Weimar and at Gotthardt Kuehl's studio in Dresden. He later attended the Munich Art Academy in the class of Franz von Stuck and studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart under Adolf Hölzel. It was through Hölzel that Ackermann was introduced to non-representational painting, a direction that would shape his future works.
Ackermann's practice encompassed various mediums, working as a painter, lithographer, graphic artist, draftsperson, and pastellist. His career was marked by both significant engagement and hardship; he was considered degenerate by the Nazi authorities, which led to a decree forbidding him from exhibiting and teaching, as well as the official confiscation of his works. Despite these challenges, he continued his abstract work at Hornstaad on Lake Constance, a location that became an artists' colony.
Throughout his life, Ackermann's work was showcased in numerous exhibitions, including solo shows in Stuttgart and West German cities, as well as collective exhibitions in Paris and Zurich. His reach extended internationally, with a retrospective exhibition in 1967 that traveled to locations such as Koblenz, Kaiserslautern, Constance, Wolfsburg, Cologne, and the University of Chicago. In 2018, his work was presented in a solo exhibition in Daegu, South Korea.
Ackermann received several honors for his contributions to art, including the honorary title of Professor in 1957 and being honored by the West German Academy in 1964. His notable works include:
