Maternidad (Макс Бекманн) Написано олією вручну, мазок за мазком

Identification of the Artwork and Artist

In this 1936 work titled Maternidad, the artist Max Beckmann explores the primal intimacy of the maternal bond. The painting presents a nearly naked, voluptuous woman as she holds a male child in her arms. It is a quiet, focused study of a mother and her infant, captured during a moment of breastfeeding.

Max Beckmann approached this subject with a sense of radical expressionism. The composition centers entirely on the physical connection between the two figures. Through his specific visual language, the artist renders the woman's form with a weight that emphasizes the gravity of the act. The scene is stripped of unnecessary distraction, focusing instead on the essential relationship between parent and offspring.

Technique and Artistic Materials

Executed in oil on canvas, this work is a profound example of radical expressionism. The artist employs a direct application of color, utilizing bold brushstrokes that lend the surface a sense of immediacy. There is a palpable weight to the paint, applied with a decisiveness that avoids any attempt at delicate naturalism. Instead, the medium is used to emphasize the raw, physical presence of the figures.

One cannot overlook the influence of Georges Rouault in the way the forms are defined. The painting utilizes heavy black strokes to outline the subjects, a technique that creates a sense of fragmentation and intensity. These dark, forceful lines do not merely delineate shape; they contribute to the overall tension within the composition, pushing the figures toward the viewer through a deliberate distortion of form.

History and Provenance of the Object

The history of this work is closely tied to the artist's inner circle. The painting was acquired by Fernando Botero directly from Beckmann's wife, Mathilde “Quappi“ von Kaulbach. This direct connection provides a clear lineage for the piece, tracing its movement from the artist's immediate family to its current institutional home.

In 2000, the work was accessioned by the Bank of the Republic. It remains held in the collection of the Bank of the Republic today. Before entering this permanent collection, the painting was exhibited at the Museo Botero in Bogotá, where it was presented to the public.
