      1898 - 1954

      Early Life, Family and Training

Jan Malý was born on June 2, 1898, in the Královské Vinohrady district of Prague. He grew up in a household where art was a tangible part of daily life, as his father, Václav Malý, worked as a decorative painter. His mother, Antonie Marie Horáková, completed the family unit during his formative years in the Czech Republic. After finishing four classes at a local Czech real school, Jan Malý began to follow the path of his father, seeking a formal education in the visual arts.

His formal training took place at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts. Between 1915 and 1918, he spent his time in the studios of professors Josef Loukotka and Vlaho Bukovac. These years provided the foundation for his development as both a painter and a graphic artist. He showed a particular aptitude for his craft during this period, eventually earning the Hlávka study scholarship during the 1920/1921 school year.

Beyond his time at the Academy, Jan Malý sought specialized instruction to refine his technical skills. He trained at the special school of professor Maxmilián Pirner, where he achieved notable results in his studies. This combination of academic instruction and specialized training helped shape the hand of a man who would spend his life dedicated to the canvas and the print.

      Exhibitions and Professional Activity

Jan Malý established a steady presence within the artistic circles of Prague, where he shared his work with the public for many years. Between 1918 and 1931, he was a regular contributor to the exhibitions held by the Jednota umělců výtvarných. His involvement with this group included participating in the XXXVII. regular spring exhibition in Prague in 1924. These years marked a period of consistent professional engagement, as he sought to connect his personal vision with the evolving art scene of the time.

His reach extended beyond the capital, reaching different corners of the region. In 1925, he was included in an art exhibition organized by the Association of Czech Graphic Artists Hollar. A few years later, in 1928, his work was featured in the Czechoslovak Fine Art 1918–1928 exhibition held in Brno. These appearances helped place his paintings within a broader context of contemporary Czech creativity.

Even after his active years had passed, his artistic legacy continued to be recognized by others. In the years 1959 and 1960, his work was part of a significant exhibition titled 19th Century Art in Slovakia, held at the Regional Gallery in Košice. This inclusion ensured that his contributions remained part of the ongoing conversation regarding the artistic history of the region.
