      The Hands of a Maker

Jan Peeters lived a life shaped by the textures of his surroundings in Amsterdam. Born in 1912, he spent his years working with materials that required a steady hand and a patient eye. He did not merely paint; he shaped light through glass and stone. His training took him from the Institute for Art Industry Education to the Rijksacademie, where he learned to handle the weight of form and the subtlety of line. He moved between the quiet precision of a draftsperson and the heavy, physical demands of a muralist.

His work often found its place in the public eye, integrated into the very walls of the cities he inhabited. He was a man of many disciplines, a practitioner who understood how a figure might look when etched into a window or how a landscape might settle into a mosaic. He was a member of several groups, including De Onafhankelijken and the Hollandse Aquarellisten Kring, finding his place among those who valued the craft of the visual arts.

A Study in Light and Form

The versatility of his output is seen in the way he approached different surfaces. He could move from the delicate wash of a watercolor to the permanence of a stained-glass window. His hands were as comfortable with a brush as they were with the tools of a glass painter. His technical range included:

      • Watercolor and painting of figures, landscapes, and still lifes
      • Stained-glass and glass-appliqué work
      • Mosaics and wall paintings
      • Draftsmanship and sketching

In 1937, his skill was recognized on a global stage when he received a bronze medal at the World Exhibition in Paris. This period of his life coincided with a deep engagement with the physical properties of his media. He worked with the ateliers of Willem Bogtman and Van Tetterode, ensuring his glasswork had the structural integrity to last for generations.

      The Marks Left Behind

His legacy is found in the quiet corners of Dutch architecture. He left behind works that interact with the sun, such as the etched windows for a clinic in Amsterdam-Noord and the glass-appliqué pieces for care homes in Hillegom and Diemen. He even contributed to the visual life of the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam through murals inspired by the commedia dell’arte. These were not mere decorations; they were part of the building's skin. He taught at the Nieuwe Kunstschool in Amsterdam, passing his knowledge of form to others. When he died in 1992, he left a record of a life spent translating the world into glass, pigment, and stone.
