The Artistic Journey of Rita Mount
Born in Montreal, Rita Mount began her artistic studies at the age of ten. She received early training in drawing, workshop, and motif from her cousin, Georges Delfosse. Her development continued through summer classes with Maurice Cullen, eventually earning her a two-year scholarship at the Art Association of Montreal. She also pursued landscape painting classes with John F. Carlson in Woodstock, New York.
Mount's travels for landscape inspiration took her from the Pacific Coast, including Banff, Victoria, Yellowstone Park, and Wyoming, to the Atlantic side, including Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and Gaspé. She became particularly renowned for her marine scenes, which were the subject of a solo exhibition at the Art Association of Montreal in 1934.
