      1858 - 1908

      A Life Rooted in Moscow

Sergei Alekseyevich Korovin entered the world on 19 August 1858 in Moscow. He grew up within a wealthy merchant family of Old Believers, though his official records listed them as peasants from the Vladimir Governorate. His upbringing was shaped by a unique blend of backgrounds; while his father was part of the merchant class, his mother came from the nobility. This environment provided him with a foundation for his later pursuits in art and illustration.

His formal education began at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he studied from 1876 to 1886. During these years, he learned under the guidance of teachers such as Vasily Perov, Alexei Savrasov, and Illarion Pryanishnikov. He later shared his knowledge with others at the same institution, teaching there during two separate periods between 1888 and 1907.

      Artistic Path and Style

As a painter, Korovin was primarily a realist. He was a follower of the Peredvizhniki movement. His early work focused on realism, but as time passed, his approach changed. In the latter half of the 1890s, he began to adopt a more sketchy style that drew influence from Impressionism. This shift in technique allowed him to move away from strict realistic depictions toward something more fluid.

His interests often led him toward landscapes. Beyond his oil paintings, he was also an illustrator. Some of his notable graphic work included illustrations for Nikolai Gogol's The Overcoat in 1900. He also contributed to decorative painting, such as his work on the Battle of Kulikovo in 1908.

      Legacy and Final Years

Korovin was a member of the Union of Russian Artists. His career saw him produce works that addressed social themes, such as his 1893 painting На миру, which depicts an obshchina meeting regarding a dispute between a rich man and a poor man. This piece reflected the social atmosphere following the emancipation of the serfs in 1861.

He remained in Moscow throughout much of his professional life. His sudden death occurred on 26 October 1908 due to heart failure. He left behind a body of work that transitioned from the heavy realism of his training to a lighter, more experimental style.
