Ault’s early career showcased considerable talent, garnering recognition for his depictions of urban landscapes—particularly “Bright Light at Russell's Corners” (1930), which exemplifies the Precisionist aesthetic with its stark geometric forms and muted palette—reflecting influences from Cubism and Surrealism. However, a debilitating alcoholism developed in the 1920s following the devastating loss of his mother’s mental health diagnosis, a tragedy compounded by the suicides of his three brothers after the calamitous 1929 stock market crash.
