Torsten Wasastjerna began his training in 1883 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. He studied under Adolf von Becker before moving his focus toward Düsseldorf between 1885 and 1888. Later, he spent four winters in Paris. It was during these Parisian years that his brushwork began to change. He focused on the way light hit a surface, seen in works like French Women Ironing from 1889. His canvases from this period, such as From Luxembourg Gardens and Place de la Concorde, show a clear interest in the way color settles on a scene.
As the 1890s arrived, his interests shifted away from the immediate observation of light toward the deeper, more quiet themes of symbolism. He began to work on larger canvases. These pieces often moved away from the everyday and into the realm of fairy tales and fantasy. His hands were not limited to oil on canvas; he also worked with other mediums to capture his visions.
His output was varied, moving between the physical world and the imagined one. He sought to capture different textures and moods through several specific methods:
His writing was as much a part of his life as his painting. He composed a collection of poems and a play, and he even wrote a polemic titled Art’s Friends and Enemies in 1902. This period of his life shows a man trying to define the boundaries of his own creative world.
Much of his life remained tied to his home. He was born in Helsinki and died in Helsinki. His presence in the Finnish art scene is felt through the many works he left behind. Over 40 of his pieces are held in the collections of the Finnish National Gallery. Many of these are kept in the Ateneum museum, where they remain part of the national record. His work, ranging from the impressionist leanings of his youth to the large-scale symbolist themes of his later years, remains a part of the visual history of Finland.
