Born in 1895 in the remote coastal village of Øster Assels on the island of Mors, Denmark, Jens Andersen Søndergaard’s life and art were inextricably linked to the raw power and beauty of the North Sea. His early years amidst the rugged landscape profoundly shaped his artistic vision, instilling a deep reverence for nature that would become the cornerstone of his expressive style. Influenced by his father, Anders Søndergaard, a local painter who transitioned into bicycle sales, Jens inherited an appreciation for visual representation and a nascent understanding of color and form – though he quickly forged his own distinct path.
Søndergaard’s formal artistic training began at the technical school in Aarhus, followed by enrollment at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. There, under the guidance of Malthe Engekstad, he honed his skills and developed a unique approach to landscape painting. However, it was not solely within the confines of academic instruction that Søndergaard’s artistic journey unfolded; his experiences traveling through Paris, southern France, and Italy in 1926 proved instrumental in broadening his horizons and enriching his palette.
