查尔斯·奥盖出生于德国柏林的一个胡格诺派家庭，是米歇尔·弗朗索瓦·奥盖与埃米莉·奥盖-韦斯特里斯的子嗣。他的艺术之旅始于故乡，1839年，他开始在艺术学院跟随威廉·奥古斯特·克劳斯学习绘画。为了追求更高层次的艺术造诣，这位十八岁的青年于1840年远赴巴黎。在法国期间，他曾师从欧仁·西塞里，并从1842年起跟随欧仁·伊萨贝学习。凭借精湛的技艺与卓越的匠心，他在法国赢得了广泛的赞誉，并在1848年的巴黎沙龙上荣获金奖。
