Pasquale De Antonis (1908 – 2001): A Pioneer of Italian Fashion Photography
Pasquale De Antonis was born in Teramo, Abruzzo, Italy, in 1908. His formative years were marked by a deep connection to his hometown and its artistic traditions—a connection that would profoundly shape his photographic vision. Moving to Pescara in the early 1930s, he established himself as a photographer, embarking on a career dedicated to capturing beauty and emotion through the lens. This initial period saw him honing his craft alongside Arturo Bragaglia in Piazza di Spagna, Rome, immersing himself in the vibrant cultural landscape of the era.- Early Training & Influences: De Antonis’s formal training at the Experimental Center of Cinematography in Rome (1936-1937) exposed him to innovative filmmaking techniques and fostered an appreciation for visual storytelling—influences that would permeate his subsequent work.
- Collaboration with Luchino Visconti & Giorgio Strehler: A pivotal moment arrived when he joined Visconti’s studio, initiating a fruitful partnership that cemented his reputation as a stage photographer.
