Born in Cyvadier, Sud-Est, near the seaport of Jacmel, Préfète Duffaut emerged as one of the most captivating voices in Haitian painting. Raised primarily by his father, a skilled sailboat builder in Jacmel, Duffaut’s early life was steeped in the maritime rhythms and coastal textures that would later define his visual vocabulary. His journey into the world of fine art began in 1944 when he encountered Rigaud Benoit, a talent scout for the newly established Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince. This pivotal meeting set the stage for a career that would see him move from precise depictions of his hometown to the creation of entirely fantastical realms.
Duffaut’s artistic evolution is a journey from the tangible to the transcendent.
