A Life in Light and Shadow

Born in Stockholm in 1885, Axel Leonard Hallgren, known to many as Acke, lived a life shaped by both physical hardship and deep creative devotion. In his teenage years, he faced the heavy reality of tuberculosis, a struggle that stayed with him throughout his years. His early training took place at the Technical School and the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, where his talent earned him a royal medal. Before settling into the life of a painter, he found work as a draughtsman for Strix, a satirical magazine led by Albert Engström. This period of sketching for humor and satire helped sharpen the observational skills he would later use to capture the faces of others.

His path eventually led him away from the familiar streets of Sweden toward the warmth of Southern Europe. From 1916 to 1928, Hallgren lived in Rome and San Remo, Italy. This time abroad was a period of profound connection with his wife, Stina. Though they lived a modest and simple life, their years in Italy were filled with a quiet joy. It was during these years that his work began to reflect the landscapes and light of the Mediterranean, often blending the structured beauty of the Italian Early Renaissance with the more modern, expressive movements of his time.

      The Language of Naturalistic Naivety

Hallgren’s approach to the canvas was characterized by what is often called naturalistic naivety. He did not seek to overwhelm the viewer with complexity, but rather to find a balance between earthy, muted tones and a growing luminosity. His early palettes were grounded in more somber colors, yet as his career progressed, his work became increasingly filled with light. He moved between many different mediums, including:

      • Paintings and watercolours
      • Drawings and personal sketchbooks
      • Prints and graphic works
      • Ceramics and glass

His subject matter was as varied as his techniques. He painted landscapes from Capri, captured the bustling energy of city life, and produced intimate portraits. Many of these portraits were deeply personal, including frequent depictions of his son, Claes, whose life was tragically cut short in an accident at age seven. Even when working on larger scales, such as his large triptych The Bacchantes, Hallgren maintained a sense of directness and sincerity.

      A Quiet Legacy

Though he did not seek the spotlight, Hallgren’s presence in the Swedish art world was felt through his commissions and his place in major collections. He was able to secure public works, including church paintings in Italy, and his work has been held by institutions such as the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the Moderna Museet, and the Gothenburg Museum of Art. His correspondence with Gösta Adrian-Nilsson shows he was connected to the broader currents of modernism, even if his own personality remained gentle and cautious.

When Hallgren returned to Stockholm, he lived near the Karlberg Canal, a site that provided much of his later motif. He continued to work in his studio near Sergels torg until failing health forced him to decline significant opportunities, such as decorating a room in Stockholm City Hall. He passed away in 1940 at the age of 55. He and Stina are laid to rest together at Norra Begravningsplatsen in Stockholm, leaving behind a body of work that remains a quiet, luminous part of Swedish art history.
