      Early Life, Family and Training

Born in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin on July 22, 1858, Alexander Kips entered a world where art was a family language. His full name, Friedrich Andreas Alexander Kiss, carried the weight of a lineage dedicated to the brush and the pigment. He was the son of Johan Friedrich Kips, a painter of shutters and signs, and Wilhelmine Friederike Rosalie Kips. This domestic environment, shared with his siblings Rosalie Auguste Marie Magdalene Kips and his brother Erich Kips, an artist himself, provided a foundation where the visual arts were woven into the very fabric of daily life.

His formal path began at the Unterrichtsanstalt des Kunstgewerbemuseums, where the young boy first learned to command the tools of his trade. It was there that his potential caught the eye of the history painter Ernst Johan Schaller. Under Schaller’s guidance in Berlin, Alexander Kips received the rigorous training necessary to master the complexities of his chosen craft. This apprenticeship shaped his hand and his eye, preparing him for a life spent translating the world onto canvas and porcelain.

Career as a Painter and Teacher

Kips moved through the artistic circles of Berlin with a steady purpose, establishing himself as a painter of great versatility. While his hand was often guided by the delicate requirements of porcelain, his reach extended into the formal instruction of others. In 1885 and 1886, he shared his knowledge of the natural world as a teacher for painting from nature at the Royal Art School. This period of instruction was followed by a long tenure at the Unterrichtsanstalt des Kunstgewerbemuseums, where from 1885 until 1902, he guided students through the complexities of figurative plaster drawing.

His reputation grew alongside his technical skill, leading to significant recognition within the academic and social hierarchies of the time. In 1890, he was honored with the title of Professor, a distinction that marked his standing among his peers. His influence reached far beyond the borders of Germany when he participated in the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, presenting his vision to an international audience. Such achievements did not go unnoticed by the state; in 1908, he was awarded the Red Eagle Order III. Class with ribbon, a high distinction that reflected a lifetime of dedicated craftsmanship and teaching.

Leadership at the Royal Porcelain Factory

In 1886, Kips stepped into the role of artistic director at the Royal Porcelain Factory Berlin, a position he would hold for over two decades until 1908. His presence at the manufactory brought a renewed sense of purpose to the workshops. He did not merely oversee the production; he actively shaped the direction of the institution through his own creative vision. His influence was felt in the very atmosphere of the factory, as his ideas and leadership guided the artisans in their daily labors.

His hand was frequently seen in the sketches and landscapes he designed for the porcelain works. He possessed a particular talent for porcelain tile painting, a medium that helped bring a new revival to the factory. Through these tiles, he breathed fresh life into the production methods of the era. His ability to translate the natural world onto ceramic surfaces allowed the manufactory to find a new momentum, ensuring that the craft remained vital and relevant during his long tenure.

      Key Works and Artistic Travels

The spirit of discovery often led Kips away from the studios of Berlin to seek the light of distant lands. Between 1883 and 1885, he undertook extensive study trips through Greece, Asia Minor, and Italy, finding inspiration in the ancient landscapes and the atmosphere of places like Olevano Romano. These travels allowed him to observe the world with a fresh eye, gathering the visual knowledge that would later inform his grander compositions. He sought out the essence of these regions, letting the sun and the stone of the Mediterranean shape his understanding of form and light.

This pursuit of classical beauty found a grand expression in his collaborative efforts. For the 1886 Jubilee Exhibition of the Berlin Academy of Arts, Kips worked alongside Max Koch to create the Pergamon panorama. This ambitious undertaking required deep study, including time spent at the German excavation house in Pergamon, to ensure the work captured the weight of history. His ability to translate such scale onto a surface was further recognized through his porcelain tile painting. His large work, Germania Protects Art and Science, earned him significant acclaim and a well-deserved prize.

Even after reaching the heights of his professional success, the desire to study remained. Following his participation in the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, he sought the Italian landscape once more. He embarked on a two-year study trip to Italy accompanied by the painter August Achtenhagen. This period of observation allowed him to continue refining his craft, ensuring that his later years remained deeply connected to the classical traditions he had studied so long before.
