      The Lithographer of Resistance

The son of a gardener, Alfred Frank begins his life in Lahr/Schwarzwald, Germany. His hands first learn the precision of a trade through an apprenticeship as a lithographer. By 1906, the political currents of Leipzig pull him toward the SPD. He moves between the technical and the creative, attending the evening school of the Royal Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Trades. His work takes shape through portraiture, landscapes, and the sharp, decisive lines of printmaking.

The aftermath of the First World War shifts his focus from the studio to the street. In 1919, he joins the Communist Party of Germany. His art becomes a tool for mobilization; he designs posters and banners that carry the weight of political conviction. By 1923, he is illustrating for the communist Sächsische Arbeiter-Zeitung, turning his graphic skills into a voice for the working class. He is no longer merely a painter, but a visual agent of a movement.

      A Life Defined by Conviction

The 1920s see Frank deeply embedded in the intellectual and educational circles of Leipzig. He teaches at the adult education center and works as an instructor at the Marxist Workers' School. His involvement with the Association of Revolutionary Visual Artists (ASSO) marks a period of intense organizational activity, where he serves as the Leipzig representative. His life is a series of intersections between aesthetic practice and radical politics.

The landscape changes abruptly in 1933. The Nazi seizure of power brings immediate consequences: dismissal from his teaching post and a sentence of one year in prison by 1934. The artist retreats into the shadows of the resistance. In 1935 and 1936, he helps found a resistance group alongside other intellectuals, eventually merging efforts with the circles of Georg Schumann and Kurt Kresse. The struggle moves from the canvas to the clandestine meeting.

      The Final Act in Dresden

The tension reaches a breaking point on July 19, 1944. Frank is arrested. The People's Court delivers its verdict on November 23, sentencing him to death. The end comes in the courtyard of the Dresden Regional Court on January 12, 1945. He is 60 years old. His death occurs in the final, chaotic months of the war, a quiet conclusion to a life spent in active opposition.

His presence remains etched into the geography of the cities he inhabited. In Leipzig, streets and schools bear his name, and memorial plaques mark the sites of his former life and his illegal meetings. He is remembered not only for the prints he produced but for the political weight of his existence.
