A Life in Light and Landscape
Born in Pamiers, France, on October 30, 1861, Alphonse Pierre Roubichou entered the world as the son of a carpenter named Justin Roubichou and Anne Vergé. His early years in the Ariège department provided a foundation of natural scenery that would later inform his brushwork. He sought formal training under the guidance of Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin-Constant, masters who helped shape his transition into a painter of landscapes and still lifes. This period of study instilled in him a disciplined approach to capturing the quietude of the natural world.
His career was marked by a steady presence in the Parisian art scene. He became a member of the Salon des Artistes Français in 1893, an achievement that signaled his acceptance into the established artistic circles of his time. Throughout his life, he moved between the familiarity of his homeland and the bustling energy of Paris, finding subject matter in both. His work often reflected the specific geography of his origins, such as the house of Joseph Lakanal in Serres-sur-Arget, alongside more urban observations of the Seine.
The Impressionist Eye
Roubichou’s approach to the canvas was rooted in the impressionist tradition. He possessed a particular interest in the way light interacted with water and foliage, a theme evident in works like Stream in the Woods. His compositions often focused on the subtle shifts of atmosphere, whether he was depicting the banks of the Seine or the more secluded corners of the French countryside. This focus allowed him to capture the essence of a moment without the need for heavy-handed drama.
His exhibition history reveals a man deeply engaged with the evolving art movements of his era. He participated in the first exhibition of the Salon des Cent in 1894 and showed his work at the Salon d'Automne between 1903 and 1905. These venues provided him with opportunities to present diverse scenes, from the Grange de Gogibus to more urban views like Quai de la Seine. His ability to navigate these different exhibition spaces demonstrated a versatility in his subject matter.
Recognition and Final Years
The later years of Roubichou's life brought formal accolades that recognized his technical skill. He was awarded a bronze medal in 1924 and a silver medal in 1925, honors that reflected his sustained contribution to the medium. Even as he aged, he continued to participate in significant international art events, including the painting competition at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, where he presented Aviron sur jardin des Tuileries.
He remained a fixture of the Parisian landscape until his death on April 13, 1938, in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. He lived a life largely dedicated to his craft, never marrying and focusing his energies on the observation of light and form. His body of work remains a record of the French landscape as seen through a lens of quiet, observant beauty.
