      Early Life, Family and Training

Anne Bonnet was born in the Brussels metropolitan area in 1908. Her early years were shaped by the quiet rhythms of life in Belgium, but the stability of her youth was interrupted by personal loss. In 1924, she began her formal studies in art, seeking to develop her hand and eye. This period of learning was cut short in 1926 when the death of her parents forced her to abandon her studies entirely.

The years following this loss were marked by a shift in her domestic life. In 1930, she married Louis Bonnet, a dealer in silk. This marriage brought a change in her financial circumstances, providing the stability necessary to eventually return to her creative pursuits. The textures and colors of the silk trade perhaps lingered in the periphery of her life during these years.

By 1936, Anne Bonnet felt ready to return to the studio. She resumed her art studies under the guidance of Jacques Maes, reclaiming the path she had set aside a decade earlier. This period of renewed training allowed her to refine her technique and prepare for her first exhibition in 1938.

      Artistic Evolution and Style

Her early work shows the influence of realists like James Ensor, leaning toward a more figurative approach. This period of her practice was marked by a focus on the tangible, before her vision began to shift. Following her first exhibition in 1938, her brushwork moved away from these traditional roots. She began to favor a geometric style of landscape painting, where the physical world was distilled into essential shapes.

As her practice matured, the landscapes became increasingly abstract. She focused on the interplay between geometry, light, and the natural environment. This evolution led to a style that invited comparisons to the works of Paul Klee. Her compositions became less about the literal depiction of a place and more about the structural essence of the scene. This shift toward abstraction was a central part of her identity as a co-founder of the group La Jeune Peinture Belge.

      Exhibitions and Recognition

Her presence in the Belgian art scene was marked by her involvement with the group La Jeune Peinture Belge. This association placed her among a circle of artists working through the complexities of the post-war era. Her work reached an international stage when it was selected for the Documenta II exhibition in Kassel. At that exhibition, three of her pieces were featured: Vestiges (1956), Vestiges Grises (1956), and Hélianthes (1957).

After her death, her work continued to be seen in public settings. In 1963, a major series of her paintings was exhibited at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. This series also appeared at the Art museums of Liège and Charleroi. These exhibitions allowed for a closer look at the way her compositions handled light and form.
