A Versatile Master of the Flemish Baroque
Antoon Sallaert was a Flemish Baroque painter, draughtsman, and printmaker active in Brussels. His artistic output was remarkably diverse, spanning religious and mythological subjects, portraiture, and tapestry design. As a highly accomplished draughtsman, he was known for his skill in ink on paper and was a master of the oil sketch, often utilizing a characteristic reddish-brown background tone. His work as a printmaker was particularly innovative; he is credited with the invention of the monotype technique, a process where he brushed bold, tapering lines onto a printing surface with meticulous precision.
Beyond his individual paintings and prints, Sallaert was a significant figure in the local textile industry, serving as an important tapestry designer for weaving workshops. He provided designs for various series, including works inspired by Otto van Veen's Emblemata Horatiana. His professional standing in Brussels was reflected in his service to the Guild of Saint Luke, where he served as deacon in both 1633 and 1648.
Technique and Artistic Style
The style of Sallaert's paintings is defined by expressive distortion, lively outlines, and nervous brushstrokes. He frequently employed foreshortening to create dramatic effects within his compositions. While his early works exhibited a sense of monumentality and plasticity through light, his later style evolved into a more dramatic, calligraphic, and mannered quality.
In the realm of printmaking, Sallaert's work often displayed an experimental character. His woodcuts and monotypes are noted for:
His monotypes, in particular, allowed him to approach the medium with a freedom similar to drawing or oil sketching, often featuring swelling lines and hand-applied white highlights.
