Life and Artistic Practice
Christopher Rådlund was a Swedish painter, draftsman, and graphic artist who lived and worked in Oslo. Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, he received his education at several institutions, including the University of Gothenburg's School of Design and Craft, the National College of Art and Design in Oslo, the Umeå Fine Arts Academy, and the National Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo. His artistic development was shaped by his studies under Jan Valentin Sæther.
His work is characterized by Scandinavian landscape motifs that lack specific, identifiable geographical connections. He described his subjects as "nameless landscapes" drawn from the North Atlantic climate zone. These compositions frequently feature elements such as:
His paintings often utilize a monochromatically bluish background.
Cultural Contributions and Legacy
Beyond his visual art, Rådlund was active in various cultural spheres. He was a driving force in the tradition-conscious new-figurative art project associated with retrogardism. His editorial work included publishing the magazine Kilden and serving as a guest editor for Aorta: journal for retrogardistic culture, where he contributed as both a writer and illustrator. He also designed book covers, such as for Emil Kléen's Venus anadyomene.
Rådlund was involved in organizing cultural events, including concerts and exhibitions of tradition-based art forms in Oslo and across Scandinavia. He was a co-curator for the exhibition Figurationer at Edsviks konsthall in 2009. His works are represented in several collections, including the Royal Library in Stockholm, the Gothenburg Museum of Art, the Storting in Oslo, and Filmstaden in Solna.
