A Life of Rebellion and Color

Born in Utrecht in 1890, Erich Wichmann lived a life that refused to settle into the quiet expectations of his station. The son of a distinguished professor of geology and mineralogy, he possessed an intellect that initially turned toward the sciences, enrolling at Utrecht University to study chemistry and biology. Yet, the lecture halls could not contain his restless spirit. He was often found far from his textbooks, cultivating the persona of a dandy, complete with long hair, checkered coats, and walking sticks. This eccentric energy eventually pulled him away from the natural sciences toward the study of art history in 1911, a shift that would redefine his entire existence.

His early years were marked by a certain friction with authority and tradition. After struggling through various educational settings, including boarding schools in Germany, he found himself increasingly drawn to the bohemian circles of the era. By 1915, he had moved to Amsterdam, leaving behind the familiar comforts of his family home for a life that was often precarious and marked by poverty. He was a man of the margins, finding more kinship with the avant-garde than with the established bourgeois society of his birth city.

The Search for Form and Expression

Wichmann’s artistic output was as varied as his temperament. He did not limit himself to a single medium, instead exploring painting, lithography, ceramics, and even metalizing concrete. His hands worked on everything from delicate silver designs for the Van Kempen & Begeer factory to heavy, textured masks and vases. This versatility allowed him to experiment with the very essence of shape and surface. In his later years, he moved through the great art capitals of Europe, seeking connection in Berlin, Vienna, Paris, and Milan.

His work often drifted into the realm of the abstract, a pursuit that mirrored his political and social wanderings. He was a member of the group De Anderen, a movement that acted as a precursor to the more structured De Stijl. Through this association, he engaged with the cutting edge of modernism, presenting works such as Abstracte compositie and Geabstraheerd bosgezicht. His canvases reflected a deep engagement with the shifting aesthetics of the early twentieth century, moving from landscapes that captured the harvest season to purely geometric and figurative abstractions.

      Politics and the Final Years

The turbulence of his art was inseparable from the turbulence of his politics. Wichmann was a figure of intense controversy, known as much for his provocative journalism as for his brushwork. He held views that were deeply anti-parliamentary and even fascist, finding common ground with figures like Marinetti in Milan. This political conviction led him to co-found the Rapaille Partij and to publish pamphlets that challenged the very foundations of Dutch democracy. His writing was often as sharp and disruptive as his visual compositions.

Despite his intense involvement in the social upheavals of his time, Wichmann lived much of his life in financial hardship. He moved through the streets of Paris as a clochard, a transient, yet he continued to exhibit on significant stages, such as the Art Deco exhibition in Paris in 1925. His life came to an end in Amsterdam in 1929, leaving behind a body of work that remains a complex record of a man who sought to break every mold placed before him.
