The Life and Artistic Practice of Erwin Pfrang
Born in Munich, Erwin Pfrang is a German painter, printmaker, and poet. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1974 to 1979, he spent many years working as an independent artist in Italy, specifically in Montepulciano, Val d’Orcia, and Catania. His career has also included stays in Munich and Augsburg, and he currently lives and works in Berlin. Pfrang is the grandson of the Munich folk comedian Konstantin Pfrang.
His artistic practice is deeply intertwined with literature. He has created three cycles of drawings based on the works of the Irish writer James Joyce, including illustrations for the Dubliners and the Circe episode of Ulysses. His work has also been dedicated to the German Expressionist writer Albert Ehrenstein and Gerald Barry's opera The Intelligence Park. In 2022, he published a collection of poems titled Fingerspitzenhorizonte (Fingertiphorizons) to accompany a selection of his pictures.
