The Concept of the French School
The French School (École française de peinture) is a concept used in the art world to refer to a common tradition shared by French painters during the period when the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, and later the Institut de France, established artistic canons. While the exact period of this school is a subject of debate, it is considered to have emerged in the 17th century and reached its end at the close of the 19th century. The term was defined a posteriori.
The school's roots are often linked to two disciplines where French artisans achieved mastery: miniature painting, beginning in the 9th century, and glassmaking, primarily during the 16th century. In the Middle Ages, French art focused on reproducing reality through faithful imagery, with centers of importance emerging in Paris and various duchies.
Academicism and Evolution
The history of French painting is closely tied to the development of the Academy. During the 17th century, the establishment of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture created an environment conducive to artistic emulation. This period saw the rise of various influential figures and the development of a theoretical and intellectual approach to art. By the 18th century, the French School was definitively instituted, with France attracting foreign artists while some French artists traveled abroad.
In the 19th century, painting became the national art of France, with Paris serving as the capital of the arts. Although the Academy was suppressed in 1793, the French School continued to prosper through the École nationale des Beaux-Arts. The movement eventually met its end with the emergence of the Impressionist movement at the end of the 19th century.
