The Life and Artistic Journey of Fritz Burkhardt
Born in Arnstein, Germany, Fritz Burkhardt was a painter, graphic artist, writer, draftsperson, and art collector. His formal education began in Eichstätt, where he trained as a teacher, before he moved to study at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. Following a scholarship from the city of Munich, he traveled to Italy. During the era of National Socialism, he withdrew from the active art scene, working only sparingly in secret. His studio was struck during a bombardment in the final year of the war, resulting in the irreparable loss of many works. In the post-war period, he became a founding member of the Neue Gruppe and was represented annually in the Große Kunstausstellung Munich at the Haus der Kunst.
Style and Subject Matter
Burkhardt's primary body of work emerged during the late years of the Weimar Republic in the 1930s. His graphic works and drawings are characterized by a strong contrast of light and shadow, reflecting the influence of a fading Expressionism. His paintings are often dominated by shades of blue, gray, and green, frequently featuring bodies that are elongated and perspectively distorted. His subject matter often explored the darker or more marginal aspects of life, including scenes from nightlife, bars, and brothels, as well as themes of crime and prostitution. His portraits and nudes often depicted models from these environments in an unembellished manner, sometimes accompanied by notes or dialogue fragments written in the margins of his sketches.
