A Life of Artistic Pursuit
Born in Piatra Neamț, Romania, Gershon Benjamin immigrated with his family to Montreal at the age of two. His early artistic training began under Edmond Dyonnet, followed by mentorship from the landscape painter Arthur-Dominique Rozaire. In 1923, Benjamin moved to New York City, where he married actress Hilda Zelda Cohen. During this period, he worked nights in the art department of The Sun and enrolled at the Art Students League of New York, Cooper Union, and The Educational Alliance. His creative practice included etching, drawing, and painting.
Benjamin was part of an artistic circle in New York that included Milton Avery, Wallace Putnam, Mark Rothko, and Adolph Gottlieb. He maintained a close friendship with Avery after the latter arrived in New York in 1925. In the 1930s, he exhibited alongside these artists, often curated by Robert Ulrich Godsoe. Later, Benjamin and his wife moved to Free Acres, New Jersey, a community of visual artists, writers, and actors.
Style and Legacy
The work of Gershon Benjamin is characterized by an emotive balance between realism and abstraction. His subject matter often focused on common people and public places. Throughout his career, his figural aspects remained a constant, even as artistic trends shifted from social realism to abstract expressionism, and later toward pop-art, minimalism, and conceptual art.
In his later years, Benjamin concentrated on painting after losing his job when The Sun closed in 1950. He was an active member of the Free Acres community, where he taught summer art courses and instructed inmates in a drug rehabilitation program at Caldwell Penitentiary. Before his death in Free Acres, he completed two retrospectives at Drew University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
