The Indiana Roots of a Muralist
The landscape of Edinburgh, Indiana, provides the first setting for the life of Grant Wright Christian. Born on July 17, 1911, he grew up on a nearby farm, a setting that would later contrast with the formal rigor of his academic training. His path toward the canvas was shaped by bloodline; his uncles, Franklin Booth and Hanson Booth, were artists who provided an early, unspoken influence on his trajectory. By the time he sought a scholarship at the John Herron Art Institute, the impulse to create was already a driving force.
He navigated his early years through a combination of academic rigor and manual labor, working in a restaurant to sustain his studies. After graduating in 1933, his talent earned him a one-year tuition scholarship to the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts. It was there that he received the Thouron Prize in composition, a recognition that signaled his command over the structural elements of visual storytelling.
Public Walls and Federal Commissions
The mid-1930s brought a shift from the private studio to the public sphere. Christian’s interest in mural decoration led him to submit designs for government competitions, a move that eventually caught the attention of the Treasury Department art project administration. In 1935, he secured a victory in a Treasury Relief Art Project competition, a moment that would define his professional legacy through large-scale public works.
His hand moved across the walls of the Indianapolis post office and court house, now known as the Birch Bayh Federal Building and United States Courthouse. The work there is divided into specific thematic groupings:
- Mail, Transportation and Delivery: A grouping located on the south wall.
- Early and Present Day Indianapolis Life: Mural panels situated on the northwest and northeast corners.
In 1938, the Section of Painting and Sculpture commissioned him for another project in Nappanee, Indiana. The resulting mural, titled Waiting for the Mail, remains a significant piece of his output, a wistful study of anticipation captured in oil on canvas.
The Final Years
Christian’s later work continued to reflect his engagement with the medium, such as his 1988 oil painting Christian Drive. He remained an active presence in the American art landscape until his death in Franklin, Indiana, on May 21, 1989. His legacy is preserved not only in the physical murals of Indiana but also in collections like the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, which holds his studies and works from his most productive era.
