The Life and Art of John Wesley Hardrick
Born in Indiana, United States, John Wesley Hardrick was an American painter who demonstrated a profound talent for art from a young age. He began teaching himself to paint with watercolors at the age of eight. During his youth, he studied under Otto Stark at Manual High School, where he entered drawings into the Indiana State Fair and received several awards. His formal art education began in 1910 when he enrolled at the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, studying under William Forsyth until 1918. To support his studies, Hardrick worked at the Indianapolis Stove Foundry and sold newspapers.
Throughout his career, Hardrick's work spanned landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. His artistic journey included significant exhibitions, such as the Tenth Annual Exhibition of Works by Indiana Artists and displays at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1927, he received a bronze medal from the Harmon Foundation for his work. His notable paintings include Little Brown Girl, Portrait of a Young Girl, and Winter Landscape. In 1934, he was commissioned by the WPA to paint a mural titled Workers, which depicted African-American foundry workers.
