Early Life and Artistic Training in Paris

Jules Besson entered the world on 1 August 1868 in Paris. Growing up in the 10ᵗʰ arrondissement, he was immersed in the atmosphere of a city that served as the center of the French art world. His early years in Paris provided the foundation for a life dedicated to the canvas, leading him toward the formal study of painting at the prestigious École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts. He spent much of his formative training there between 1887 and 1895, honing his technical skills within the walls of the institution.

During his time at the Beaux-Arts, Jules Besson studied under several notable figures who shaped his understanding of composition and form. He was a pupil of Alexandre Cabanel and Élie Delaunay, learning the rigors of classical training. However, it was his time with Gustave Moreau that proved particularly significant. While he worked closely with Moreau, Besson eventually chose to move away from his teacher's specific style, seeking a path that was uniquely his own. This period of intense study in Paris defined his early development as a painter before his later travels took him far from his birthplace.

      Artistic Style and Movements

While studying at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, Besson found himself at a crossroads of influence. He was a pupil of several significant masters, including Alexandre Cabanel and Élie Delaunay, but it was his time with Gustave Moreau that defined his departure from tradition. Rather than following his teacher into the realms of idealism, legend, or dreams, Besson chose a path that was much more grounded in the tangible world. He moved away from the ethereal qualities of his mentor to embrace a formula of realistic art, finding his true voice in the Naturalism movement.

This shift toward Realism allowed him to look closely at the lives of ordinary people. He felt a deep sensitivity toward the working-class conditions of his era, capturing the struggles and realities faced by laborers both in his native France and across the English countryside. His approach was closely aligned with the sensibilities of realist painters like Jules Bastien-Lepage and Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret. Instead of seeking the sublime, he sought the truth of the human condition as it existed in the soot and toil of everyday life.

Career in Indochina and Later Years

In his fifties, Besson left the familiar streets of Paris for Indochina. This move marked a significant shift in his life, as he transitioned from the academic circles of France to the changing landscapes of Southeast Asia. His presence in the region was marked by professional recognition, including winning the Prix de l'Indochine in 1925. This period saw him deeply involved in the local art scene, moving beyond his own canvas to shape the education of others.

His commitment to teaching led him to the école d'arts appliqués at Gia Dinh. In 1926, he succeeded André Joyeux as the director of the institution. He remained a central figure in the local artistic community for many years, eventually serving as the director of the École d'arts appliqués de Gia Dinh from 1940 to 1942. His influence was not confined to the classroom; his reach extended as far as Cambodia, leaving a mark on the regional artistic landscape through his leadership and guidance.

Besson remained in the region until his death in 1942 in Saigon. His time in Indochina represented a long chapter of his life, one defined by his dedication to the school and his engagement with the life of the south of Vietnam. He lived through a period of significant transition, ultimately passing away in the city where he had spent much of his later career.

      Notable Works and Museum Collections

Besson’s output reflected a deep interest in the realities of labor and the changing landscapes of his time. In 1898, he produced the engraving Au Pays noir, a work that looked toward the industrial English Black Country. Later, around 1920, he painted The Miners, an oil piece depicting a group of men in overalls and caps standing together, some holding their tools. This particular painting is held in the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia.

His influence also extended through the hands of those he taught. The works produced by his students in Indochina left a vivid record of life in the south of Vietnam and Cambodia. These pieces captured the daily existence and atmosphere of the region during his tenure as a director.
