The Life and Career of Jürgen Wegener
Born in Słupsk, Germany, Jürgen Wegener was the son of a theologian and a classical philologist. His academic and artistic journey began in 1919 when he studied art history in Graz, followed by studies in mural painting and stage design at the Berlin Academy of Arts. During his formative years, he also completed an apprenticeship as a painter. By 1927, Wegener had established himself as a stage designer at the Ostdeutscher Landestheater in Berlin, a role that preceded his appointment to a professorship.
In 1930, he was granted a teaching position for mural painting at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Weimar. His work during the era of National Socialism included participation in the Great German Art Exhibitions in Munich in 1934 and 1944. Notably, the oil painting Kindertheater was acquired by the Deutsche Arbeitsfront in 1944. Throughout his career, Wegener was a prolific painter and graphic artist, contributing to the visual landscape through various mediums.
Artistic Contributions and Later Years
Wegener’s technical skill was frequently applied to large-scale architectural projects. Before the end of the war in 1945, he painted murals in thirteen churches across Thuringia and created wall paintings for public buildings, such as the mural in the Pößneck town hall. His artistic output spanned several disciplines, including:
Following the war, Wegener moved toward Starnberger See in Bavaria. He remained active in the art community until his passing in Feldafing. Although he lived to see many of his professional achievements, he passed away shortly before the opening of an exhibition in the Pöckinger town hall.
