The Visual Language of Laylah Ali
Laylah Ali is an American contemporary visual artist born in Buffalo, United States. Her practice involves small-scale gouache paintings and drawings on paper, often utilizing the visual language of cartoons, comics, and caricatures. She is known for a unique approach that employs bright colors and a cartoon strip format to portray socio-political ideas and current events. Rather than focusing on specific events, her work uses a level of emotion and a sense of the performative, where figures act as characters in a play or figures on a crude stage.
Her work is characterized by a meticulous preparation process, often planning details for many months to ensure precision. In her Greenheads series, created between 1996 and 2005, she designed characters to minimize or interrogate differences of gender, age, and race, creating figures that are human-like yet removed from a specific social context. More recently, since 2015, she has worked on The Acephalous Series, which features gender-conscious figures, some of which are sexualized or lack heads.
