A Life of Art and War
Mališa Glišić was a Serbian painter from the early 20th century. His education began at the Serbian Drawing and Painting School in Belgrade, where he studied from 1903 to 1905 under Rista Vukanović and later Beta Vukanović. He subsequently enrolled in the private art school of Hugo von Habermann in Munich in 1908. Between 1910 and 1912, he resided in Italy, creating landscapes inspired by the surroundings of Rome and Naples.
In 1909, he served as the set designer for the National Theater in Belgrade. Following the start of the Balkan War, Glišić returned to Serbia and joined the Second Army of Stepe Stepanović, participating in the Siege of Odrin. He continued to serve in the same army during World War I, during which time he painted scenes from the trenches and landscapes. He died in either 1915 or 1916 under unexplained circumstances.
Artistic Periods and Works
Glišić’s painting is categorized into three distinct periods: the school period (1907–1910), the Italian period (1911–1912), and the war period (1912–1915).
