The Life and Artistic Journey of Moritz Melzer
Moritz Melzer was a German painter and graphic artist associated with the Expressionism movement. Born in Bělá u Jevíčka, Czech Republic, his early career began as a porcelain painter before he transitioned into formal art education. Between 1906 and 1908, he studied at the art academy in Weimar under Ludwig von Hofmann. Following his move to Berlin in 1908, he became an active participant in the city's art scene, exhibiting with the Berlin Secession in 1909.
Melzer's career included significant roles in the development of modern art institutions. He was a co-founder of the Neue Secession and helped establish the School of Free and Applied Arts alongside Georg Tappert. His work also extended to book illustrations, appearing in publications such as Der Sturm, Der Bücherwurm, and Die Aktion. In 1913, he was honored with the Villa-Romana Prize.
Later Years and Artistic Legacy
During the period between 1921 and 1943, Melzer served as a teacher at the Reimann School, instructing subjects including portrait, nude, composition, decorative painting, and stage design. He also led summer studios and painting trips to southern countries.
In 1937, during the Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) campaign, many of Melzer's works were confiscated by the Nazis and subsequently destroyed. These works included various compositions, woodcuts, and lithographs. He remained in Berlin until his death in 1966.
