The Life and Legacy of Raphael Coxie
Raphael Coxie was a Flemish Renaissance painter known for his portrait and history paintings. Born in Mechelen, Belgium, he was the eldest son of Michiel Coxie and Ida van Hasselt. As a pupil of his father, he became a master in the Mechelen Guild of Saint Luke in 1562. His career saw him move from Mechelen to Antwerp, where he became a master in the local Guild of St. Luke in 1585, and later to Brussels, where he became a master of the local painter's guild in 1605.
Throughout his life, Coxie was a passionate gardener and maintained a friendship with the botanist Carolus Clusius, to whom he sent flower drawings. His professional life included various commissions, such as a retable of the Virgin Mary for the Antwerp Cathedral in collaboration with Hans Vredeman de Vries. He also worked on a major commission for the city of Ghent, painting a Last Judgement for the chamber of the city aldermen between 1588 and 1589.
Artistic Style and Notable Works
The works of Raphael Coxie are painted in the Italianate style introduced to Flanders by his father. He remained faithful to this style even as the Baroque movement emerged. While he completed commissions for portraits, no portraits are currently attributed to him.
The only work certainly attributed to him is the Last Judgement painted for the Ghent city magistrate, which is currently held in the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent. This composition features Christ seated on a cloud, surrounded by saints and angels, with the blessed on the left and the damned being dragged to hell by monsters and satyrs on the right. Other works tentatively attributed to him or associated with his hand include:
