      The early textures of Pistoia

Born in Pistoia, Italy, on September 30, 1939, Roberto Barni began to see the world through oil colors around 1952. His earliest memories carry the sight of the moon and the flickering flames from a bombed town at night. By the end of the 1950s, his hands were working with more than just paint; he experimented with wood, iron, photography, and newspaper to build abstract forms. These early works used heavy materials to create something tactile. In 1960, he began showing these pieces in Pistoia and Florence.

The years between 1960 and 1970 saw him moving through various European galleries. He worked with technical drawings and industrial colors to map out parts of town topography. Sometimes, his canvases were large pads of newspaper where he drew the outlines of vast territories. Between 1964 and 1966, his landscapes took on a quality similar to xylography. His practice was not about a single style but a search through different surfaces.

The shift toward form and space

In 1967, the work changed again as he began applying three-dimensional forms onto white cloths using metallic and rusty red colors. This period was marked by an attempt to move away from simple imitation and toward a more concrete, symbolic space. By 1972, after a decade of exploring different paths, his work returned to themes of history and painting, notably with the piece Resurrection. He often spoke of anachronism, a way of seeing that does not let contemporary techniques or materials dictate the vision.

As time passed, the weight of the work moved from the canvas into the third dimension. His focus shifted increasingly toward sculpture. He used bronze casting to move away from the traditional use of marble, creating slender figures that inhabit space with a sense of motion. These figures often appear anonymous, stripped of individual identity to represent a more universal human presence. In his hands, the metal carries the weight of waiting and existence.

A life in movement and bronze

The late 1980s brought a period of significant international activity. He maintained a studio in New York City between 1986 and 1987 and exhibited at the Queens Museum and the Shape Gallery. His work reached audiences in Washington DC, Los Angeles, Munich, and Basel. In 1988, he participated in both the Venice Biennale and the Montecarlo Sculpture Biennale as a sculptor.

His sculptural output includes several notable pieces that inhabit public and private collections:

      • Giro del Sole: A statuary group located in Pistoia.
      • I passi d’oro (The Golden Strides): A monument in Florence, created in memory of the victims of the 1993 Uffizi bombing, utilizing gold to catch the light.
      • Continuo: Created for the Daniel Spoerri collection in Seggiano.
      • The Great Vacina: A sculpture for the Pecci Museum in Prato.

Living and working in Florence, he continues to bridge the gap between painting and sculpture. He views them as a relationship of exchange, where painting gains volume and sculpture adopts the chromatic qualities of paint. His work remains rooted in the materials he chooses, whether it be the heavy presence of bronze or the layered textures of paper and iron.
