The Artistic Journey of Sergey Gerasimov
Sergey Vasilyevich Gerasimov was a Soviet and Russian painter who studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture between 1907 and 1912. During his formative years, he was a student of the Russian Impressionist Konstantin Korovin and later joined the Makovets group. His early watercolors are considered masterpieces, exhibiting a tendency toward modernism. In the 1920s and 1930s, Gerasimov taught at the state art school Vkhutemas, creating posters and works sympathetic to the new Communist government in a style later known as Socialist realism.
Despite his involvement in Socialist realism, Gerasimov was known as a liberal thinker whose paintings showed the influences of Impressionism and other modern movements. This aesthetic stance placed him in opposition to Aleksandr Gerasimov during the Stalin era, leading to his demotion from the position of First Secretary of the Union of Painters of the USSR.
Life and Legacy
During World War II, from 1941 to 1943, Gerasimov and the faculty and student body of the Surikov Art Institute were moved from Moscow to the city of Samarkand. Many of his most famous works were painted during this period, depicting scenes of the old oriental city of Samarkand. These works are currently on display at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
Gerasimov served as the director of the Moscow Surikov State Academic Institute of Fine Arts from 1943 to 1948. He was later re-instated as the head of the Russian Artists' Union following the death of Stalin, a position he held until his death in 1964. His students included several important Soviet artists, such as:
