Born in 1808, William Davison was a British artist whose career spanned much of the first half of the nineteenth century. His life, which concluded in 1870, was defined by a quiet dedication to the medium of watercolour. Davison’s brush captured the quiet dignity of his sitters, most notably in his portrait of Robert Lindley. This work, which later served as the basis for a mezzotint by J. P. Quilley, presents the subject in a three-quarter-length view. The composition finds Lindley seated, a posture that suggests both repose and readiness. In his left hand, he holds a cello, while his right hand is occupied with a pinch of snuff. The arrangement of the scene is completed by a table upon which his right arm rests, holding a bow, music, and a snuff-box.
Beyond his portraiture, Davison’s output included various studies of landscape and maritime life. His watercolors often focused on the intersection of nature and human industry, such as a scene featuring a covered wagon positioned near a stone mill. Other works captured the movement of the sea, including depictions of boats off the coast.
