Francis de Erdely, born Ferenc Erdélyi, was a Hungarian-American painter, sculptor, and printmaker. His formal education began at the Hungarian Royal Drawing School, followed by studies at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid and the Sorbonne in Paris. His technical foundation was rooted in European classicism, characterized by specific brushwork and composition. As his career progressed, his subject matter shifted from history painting and classical antiquity toward themes of war, suffering, and human strength.
After immigrating to the United States in 1939, he lived in New York and Chicago before moving to Los Angeles. In America, his work evolved to include portraits of wealthy patrons and depictions of the American Scene.
