A life of sketches and social standing

Henry William Bunbury lived within the quiet rhythms of the English landed class. Born in 1750 at Manor House in Mildenhall, Suffolk, he was the second son of Sir William Bunbury, 5th Baronet. His early years were shaped by the halls of Westminster School and later St Catharine's College, Cambridge. He did not finish his degree, choosing instead to wander through Europe. During these travels, perhaps even in Rome, he watched the people and customs of foreign lands. These observations found their way onto paper in works like La Cuisine de la Poste, which he brought back to show at the Royal Academy in 1770.

His position in society provided a certain ease. He held the rank of lieutenant-colonel of the West Suffolk Militia and served as equerry to the Duke of York and Albany. These roles, alongside his family's established status, meant he did not need to rely on his art for survival. He moved among the notable figures of his era, maintaining friendships without the friction that often came from political satire. His hand was more interested in humor than in biting social commentary.

The lines of humor and storytelling

Bunbury’s talent lay in the quick, observant line of the caricaturist. He worked with pencil, black and red chalk, and watercolor, often seeing his designs translated through the work of engravers using stipple or dot techniques. His subjects were frequently lighthearted, focusing on the absurdities of daily life. Some of his most recognized pieces include:

      • A Long Story (1782)
      • Country Club (1788)
      • Barber's Shop (1803)

One particular work, A Long Minuet as Danced at Bath, used a way of telling a story through sequential images that some consider an early ancestor of the comic strip. He also spent years working on a series of drawings based on Shakespeare, though he only completed half of the intended forty-eight pieces before stopping in 1796.

      Later shifts and final years

As time passed, the nature of his work changed. The loss of his wife and eldest son brought a shift in his focus. He turned away from the satirical sketches of his youth toward the more deliberate medium of oil painting. This period of his life saw him moving away from the quick wit of the caricature towards something more permanent and heavy. He died in 1811 in Keswick, Cumbria.

Though he did not seek to offend the powerful, his presence remains in collections such as the British Museum and the Yale Center for British Art. His work captures a specific moment of English life, seen through the eyes of a man who spent much of his time simply watching how people moved, dressed, and behaved.
