Born in the Sydney suburb of Ashfield, Jean Appleton was a painter, art teacher, and printmaker who demonstrated a lifelong passion for the arts. After earning an intermediate certificate in arts in 1928, she enrolled in a five-year diploma course in drawing and illustration at the East Sydney Technical College. Her formal education continued in England at the Westminster School of Art, where she studied under Bernard Meninsky and Mark Gertler. During her time in London, she produced Australia's two earliest cubist paintings, titled Still Life 1937 and Painting IX 1937.

In addition to her painting, she became interested in printmaking, which she practiced until 1980. Her life and work were celebrated through various solo exhibitions and a retrospective held at the Campbelltown City Bicentennial Art Gallery.
