A Life Cut Short
Johan Jørgen Broch lived a brief existence, leaving behind only a small window into his talent. Born in Oslo on 10 February 1846, he was the son of Friederike Ernestine Wilhelmine Schmidt. His time in the world was remarkably short, as he passed away in the same city on 10 April 1868, at the age of only twenty-two.
The traces of his life reached the public through the care of his mother, Wilhelmine Fredrikke Broch. Following her death, she left a gift to the National Museum for art, architecture, and design in 1902, ensuring that what little he produced would be preserved for others to see.
The Light of the Coast
Though his career was limited by his early death, Broch captured a specific moment of natural beauty on canvas. His work, such as Coastal Landscape in Sunset, shows an interest in the quiet transitions of the Norwegian landscape. Created in 1868, this oil painting on canvas uses the medium to settle into the colors of a fading day.
The painting features several specific elements:
- Technique: Oil on canvas
- Subject: A coastal scene during sunset
- Dimensions: 99 cm in width and 73.5 cm in height
In this work, the light of the setting sun meets the edge of the sea, a scene that remains part of the permanent collection at the Nasjonalmuseet. It offers a glimpse into how he perceived the atmosphere of his home region before his life ended.
