The Wandering Brush
Alexandre Nozal lived through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, moving between the quiet corners of provincial France and the busy streets of Paris. His life was marked by a steady movement from place to place, a habit reflected in the many landscapes he captured on canvas. He carried with him more than just brushes; his family later offered travel notebooks to museums like the Carnavalet and the Petit Palais, which hold traces of his observations during his travels.
His work often focused on the light found in specific, quiet moments. One might look at a river in the snow or a village caught in the sun, seeing only what he chose to record. He spent time in the Camargue, producing a large panoramic view of Saintes Marie de la Mer that captures the breadth of that landscape. There is a certain stillness in his depictions of Normandy and the sunset over a river, where the focus remains on the natural scene itself.
A Record of Places
The paintings left behind are mostly oils on canvas, often signed with a simple A. Nozal or A Nozal in the corners. These works do not seek to change the landscape but to hold it. His subjects ranged from wide views to smaller, more intimate studies:
- A river landscape at sunset, where the light settles on the water.
- A village in a sunlit landscape, showing the warmth of a clear day.
- Spring in Normandy, capturing the seasonal shift in the French countryside.
- The view of the Camargue, presented in a wide, panoramic format.
His presence is felt in the provincial and Parisian museums that house his pieces. These collections contain not only finished paintings but also the notebooks that document his path through different regions. He worked with a directness, leaving behind records of how the light hit a river or how a village appeared under the sun.
