The Artistic Journey of Li Huayi
Born in 1948 in Shanghai, People's Republic of China, Li Huayi began his artistic training at the age of six under the tutelage of Wang Jimei. His education expanded at sixteen when he began studying Western art with Zhang Chongren. During the Cultural Revolution, his dexterity with brush and ink allowed him to remain in Shanghai to paint Soviet-style propaganda murals. Following this period, Li traveled throughout China, visiting sites such as the mountains of Huangshan in Anhui Province and the Buddhist cave temples at Dunhuang in Gansu Province. In 1978, his travels took him to Beijing, where he encountered Northern Song landscape paintings and modern Western art.
In 1982, Li Huayi and his wife immigrated to San Francisco. He enrolled at the Academy of Art, San Francisco, where he completed a master's degree in 1984. His early American exhibitions included a 1984 show at the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena, which featured Dunhuang-style paintings alongside abstract expressionist works.
