      1788 - 1868

A Life in Paris and Beyond

Antoinette Élisabeth Jeanne Bandelier de Béfort entered the world in Paris on 8 August 1788. She grew up in a commercial environment near the Place Louis-le-Grand, the daughter of a merchant named Antoine-Pierre Bandelier and Marie-Louise-Élisabeth Gauvain. This upbringing provided her with the means to pursue her artistic interests during a period of great change in France, spanning the late Napoleonic era through the Bourbon Restoration.

Her training began in the studios of Gioacchino Serangeli and Césarine Davin-Mirvault, both of whom followed the traditions of David. These early years of study shaped her approach to the canvas. Beyond her work as a painter, she found practical ways to support herself through art restoration. In 1824, records show she worked on restoring and varnishing a painting by Perugino.

In 1841, she married Pierre Pascal Ledru, a captain-adjutant major in the 18th Line Infantry Regiment. While her early career was centered in the heart of Paris, her later years took her elsewhere, and she eventually passed away in Lyon on 17 October 1868.

      The Salon and Classical Subjects

Between 1810 and 1819, Béfort was a regular presence at the Paris Salon. Her early success arrived quickly; in 1810, she received a second-class medal for her work Une jeune Thébaine pansant son père blessé. This painting, which depicts a young woman from Thebes tending to her wounded father, remains one of her most noted pieces and is held at the David Owsley Museum of Art.

Her repertoire focused on the stories of antiquity and epic poetry. She brought these classical and mythological themes to life through several notable exhibitions:

      • The 1812 Salon featured Thésée et Ariane.
      • In 1814, she presented works such as Eurydice, fuyant les poursuites d’Aristée, est piquée par un serpent and Les adieux d’Hector et d’Andromaque.
      • Later exhibitions in 1817 and 1819 included Céphale et Procris and various portraits.

While she found success with history painting, her later years at the Salon were met with different results. In 1837 and 1840, the jury declined several of her portrait submissions. Despite these setbacks, her dedication to the Neoclassical style and her ability to navigate the professional art world of Paris marked her as a significant figure among the women painters of her generation.
