      A Life of Shifting Borders

Stockholm, 1807. The son of Jean-Pierre Mazér, a French silk weaver, Carl Peter Mazér enters a world defined by craftsmanship and movement. His early years are shaped by the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, where he studies under Gustaf Erik Hasselgren. By 1825, the trajectory shifts toward Paris. He follows his father to France, finding himself in the studio of Antoine-Jean Gros. Here, the young artist is not merely a student but an assistant, meticulously painting backgrounds for historical scenes. The brushwork of the academy meets the grand scale of French history.

The streets of Paris provide a different kind of education. During the July Revolution of 1830, Mazér moves from the studio to the barricades. This period of political upheaval marks a departure from pure academic study into the raw reality of contemporary events. After this friction in France, his path wanders through Italy between 1833 and 1835, before returning to the familiar landscapes of Sweden.

The Russian Years and the Siberian Frontier

A profound transformation occurs as Mazér moves eastward. He settles in Russia for fifteen years, finding work in Moscow and Yaroslavl. The role of a drawing teacher provides stability, but the landscape calls him further. He travels by barge down the Volga, moving from Nizhny Novgorod to Astrakhan, capturing sketches of the river's progression. In 1848, the scope of his work expands to the edges of the empire in Siberia.

In the harsh light of the Siberian frontier, Mazér documents the human cost of political exile. He creates portraits of revolutionaries held in the remote territories. A moment of tension arises in Tobolsk; while attempting a group portrait of Alexander Muravyov and his family, the police intervene, halting his work and forcing him from the city. This period is marked by a specific focus on the faces of those caught in the machinery of the state.

His Russian period also yields one of his most significant commissions: a posthumous portrait of Alexander Pushkin, requested by Pavel Nashchokin. The work connects Mazér to the highest circles of Russian literary and social history.

The Lens and the Final Move

As the mid-century approaches, the medium changes. In 1851, Mazér opens a daguerreotype studio in Moscow. He adapts his eye for detail from the canvas to the silver plate, making copies of existing artworks and capturing new portraits through the emerging technology of photography. This transition from painter to photographer defines his later professional identity.

Returning to Stockholm in 1854, the struggle for a living through painting persists. He turns more exclusively to photography, even producing a professional manual in 1864. The final chapters of his life take him back to the heart of European art. After a two-year stay in Paris starting in 1876, he moves to Naples. It is here, in 1884, that the life of the Swedish painter, graphic artist, and photographer reaches its end.
