      1926 - 2015

      A Life Rooted in Zwickau

Edgar Klier was born into a Christian mining family in Zwickau on February 23, 1926. Growing up as the youngest of three children, his early years were shaped by the industrial landscape of his birthplace. Before he became a painter, he learned the craft of ceramic painting, completing an apprenticeship in 1943. This technical foundation in ceramics would later influence his ability to work with diverse materials and surfaces.

His formal artistic education began in earnest after the war. He attended the Mal- und Zeichenschule in Zwickau from 1948 to 1950, followed by years of intensive study at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden between 1951 and 1955. During his time in Dresden, he learned under several notable instructors, including Erich Fraß, Heinz Lohmar, Max Erich Nicola, and Rudolf Bergander. In 1951, he married Erika Klier, a fellow painter and graphic artist, with whom he would later collaborate on significant ceramic works.

      Themes of Industry and Earth

Klier’s work was deeply connected to the rhythms of daily life in the German Democratic Republic. He lived and worked as a freelance artist in Zwickau from 1956 onward, often finding his subject matter in the local mining industry and the surrounding landscapes. He participated in a specialized group known as a "Künstlerbrigade," working under the motto "Kunst hilft Kohle" (Art helps coal) at the Steinkohlenwerk Martin Hoop. This period allowed him to create portraits and studies of miners, capturing the reality of industrial labor.

His interests extended beyond the canvas into large-scale architectural projects and ceramics. Some of his notable works include:

      • Produktionsberatung: An oil painting from 1955.
      • Arbeiterfrau: A 1957 oil painting.
      • Vor Ort: An oil work from 1960 held in the Gemäldegalerie Neue Meister.
      • Unter Wasser: A large ceramic wall painting created with Erika Klier in 1968.
      • Aus Bulgarien: Two wall paintings using Majolica glazes, completed in 1968.

      Legacy and Recognition

Throughout his career, Klier was an active participant in the artistic community of Zwickau. He led painting and ceramics circles at the former Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium and served as a leader for various artistic groups within the mining works. His dedication to teaching and local culture helped shape many amateur painters in the region.

His contributions earned him several honors, including the Max-Pechstein-Preis of Zwickau in 1952 and 1956, as well as the Kunstpreis der DDR in 1961. While much of his work focused on the immediate surroundings of Zwickau, pieces like Erinnerung an Wolgograd show a broader reach. He passed away in his home city of Zwickau on June 8, 2015, leaving behind a body of work that remains part of the Kunstsammlungen Zwickau.
