      A Life Between Borders

Eero Juhani Snellman lived a life that moved across many landscapes, much like the subjects of his paintings. Born in Helsinki, Finland, on June 8, 1890, he began his formal training in his home city between 1908 and 1910. However, his curiosity led him far beyond the borders of Finland. For two decades, from 1910 to 1930, he traveled through France, Italy, Germany, the United States, Mexico, and England. These travels were not merely for sightseeing; they were essential periods of study that shaped his eye.

While many remember him for his brushwork, Snellman also left a mark on the identity of his nation. Alongside Bruno Tuukkanen, he helped design the Flag of Finland. This contribution to his country's symbols remains a significant part of his history. During his time in Paris, he also acted as an initiator for the Cité internationale des arts center, a project born from a shared dream with architect Félix Brunau to create a space where artists from all over the world could find a home to create.

      The Painter's Eye

In his studio, Snellman focused on the quiet details of life and nature. He was particularly known as a portrait painter, capturing the likenesses of those around him with care. Yet, he often turned his attention toward the outdoors, finding inspiration in the light and terrain of the landscapes he encountered. His style is often described as post-impressionistic, a method that allowed him to interpret the world through a specific lens of color and form.

Some of his notable works include:

      • Laatokan maisema (1921), a landscape piece.
      • Sunnuntai puutarhassa (Söndag i trädgården) (1934), which later appeared in auction records.

His work reflects the many places he inhabited, from the streets of Paris to the landscapes of his Finnish roots. He passed away in Helsinki on November 7, 1951, leaving behind a body of work that connects his international travels to his deep connection to Finland.
