The Botanical Illustrator of the Audubon Expeditions
Joseph Mason was an American artist and botanical illustrator born in Delaware, Ohio. During the early 19th century, he became a pupil of John James Audubon, demonstrating exceptional talent as a draftsperson. Audubon himself noted Mason's ability to paint flowers, remarking that he drew them better than almost any other man in America.
As an assistant during Audubon's travels down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers toward New Orleans, Mason performed various expedition duties, including rowing boats, ferrying supplies, and shooting specimen birds. His primary artistic contribution involved painting the floral backgrounds for bird studies. Between 1820 and 1822, he produced between 150 and 200 background watercolors, over 50 of which were used in the plates of The Birds of America.
Later Life and Legacy
Mason's work in The Birds of America often went uncredited, as he was instructed to sign his name in pencil while Audubon signed in ink. This led to significant dissatisfaction for Mason, who felt he had been treated unjustly regarding the publication of his work.
Following his time traveling, Mason returned to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he lived for the remainder of his life, with brief periods spent in Philadelphia, Michigan, and Indiana. He established himself as a private art teacher and portrait painter. He died of pneumonia in Hamilton County. In 2013, a bronze relief marker was dedicated to memorialize his contributions to the monumental Birds of America project.
