      Early Life, Family and Training

Jules van Biesbroeck was born in 1848 in Ghent, Belgium. His early years were shaped by the steady, repetitive motions of his father's workshop. Before picking up a brush for formal study, he began his apprenticeship under his father, learning the precise and demanding craft of a chaser. This early work with metal required a disciplined hand and a close eye for detail, habits that would follow him into his later pursuits.

As he grew, his focus shifted toward the canvas. He sought formal instruction at the École des Beaux-Arts de Gand, where he refined the technical skills he had first encountered through metalwork. This period of study allowed him to transition from the meticulous precision of a chaser to the broader, more expressive language of a painter. By the time he completed his training, he had developed a dual capability in both sculpture and painting, moving between the two with a practiced ease.

      Artistic Career and Recognition

His public debut arrived in 1871 at the Salon in Ghent. By the time he reached Paris, his work had already begun to stir reactions; his piece Le lancement d’Argos earned an honorable mention at the Salon, though its depiction of the nude was noted for being somewhat shocking to the audience. He moved between the roles of painter and sculptor, showing a versatility that was recognized by several institutions. In 1897, he took second place in the Prix de Rome belge for sculpture, followed a year later by a second place in the same competition for painting in 1898.

The years that followed brought more formal recognition across Europe. He was awarded a gold medal in Munich in 1901 and another gold medal in Milan in 1906. These honors coincided with a growing presence in the academic circles of Italy. By 1910, his standing was such that he became a member of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera.

      Teaching and Academic Roles

In 1879, he took up a position as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. He spent nearly three decades within those walls, remaining at the institution until 1908. His presence in the classroom was a steady fixture of the city's artistic life, shaping the hands and eyes of many students, including Gustave de Smet, Frits van den Berghe, Gustave Van de Woestyne, and Hippolyte Daeye.

The structure of the Academy saw changes under his influence. In 1892, he worked alongside Jean-Joseph Delvin to reorganize the Academy courses. This period of restructuring helped define the curriculum for those following in his footsteps. Beyond the formal halls of the Academy, his role as a teacher extended into his own home, where he was responsible for the training of his son, Jules Pierre.

      Key Works and Collections

His early output showed a precocious hand. At the age of fourteen, he saw his work Le Pâtre sold at the Triennale de Gand. This early success was followed by other compositions, including Le lancement d’Argos, which was exhibited in Paris and drew attention for its depiction of the nude.

One of his notable oil on canvas paintings is titled Happy, created about 1883. This work is held in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent (MSK). The canvas measures 171.5 cm in height and 100.2 cm in width.

      Later Years and Death

After his time in the academy, the rhythm of his life shifted toward the Italian coast. He began traveling to Bordighera every year, a recurring habit that eventually defined his later years. In this place, he returned to the craft of his youth, working as a chaser. The metalwork required a different kind of focus than the canvas, a return to the manual precision he had learned from his father.

The onset of the First World War brought a permanent change to his residence. He left Belgium behind and emigrated completely to Bordighera. He remained there until his death on July 19, 1920, in Bordighera, Italy.
