The Life and Artistic Evolution of Louis Comtois
Born in Montreal, Canada, Louis Comtois pursued his classical studies at Collège de Saint-Laurent before continuing his education at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal. His artistic journey eventually took him abroad, leading him to live in Paris, New York, and Washington. Throughout his career, which spanned from 1968 until his death in New York City, Comtois exhibited his work in various international locations, including Paris and the United States.

Comtois's work is held in several prominent institutions, including the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, and the Musée des beaux-arts du Canada. His notable pieces include Sans titre I, Implications of White, and Incision, Incisive, Caesurae. In 1986, he was awarded the Prix Gershon Iskowitz.
His legacy is further marked by the creation of the Prix Louis-Comtois in 1991, an award established to recognize the quality of mid-career artists in the field of contemporary art in Montreal.
