The Determination of a Daily Practice

December 31, 1895. Hawley, Minnesota. A child named Lucile Esma Lundquist grows up in the rural landscape of northern Minnesota, surrounded by farmland and gardens. The path toward the canvas begins with a letter—a twelve-page plea written to her parents to allow her to attend art school. This early resolve carries her to the Minneapolis School of Art, where she meets Arnold Blanch. By 1918, she secures one of only ten scholarships in the country to study at the Art Students League of New York.

The studio becomes her world. Under the guidance of Kenneth Hayes Miller and Boardman Robinson, she refines a technique that spans painting, lithography, and etching. She does not merely wait for inspiration; she treats art as a profession requiring relentless effort. In her own words, the work demands "the hanging on and moving forward no matter what, the not getting lazy." This discipline defines her decades of output, from the sketches piled in her studio to the large-scale murals that would eventually decorate public buildings across the American South.

A Life Between Colonies and Continents

The scene shifts to New York City and later to the Woodstock Art Colony. Alongside Arnold, Lucile becomes a central figure in the revitalization of this community. There are moments of profound connection with the giants of the era. In San Francisco, she shares a studio building and even a telephone line with Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. She remembers Kahlo not as a distant figure, but as a buddy, a companion with whom she painted every day during a shared winter.

Travel expands her visual vocabulary. A Guggenheim Fellowship in 1933 provides the means to study in Germany and France. In Paris, the influence of Cezanne and Renoir settles into her work. She returns to the United States with a broadened perspective, moving between the academic rigor of teaching positions at institutions like the Ringling School of Art and the more communal life of the Woodstock artists.

      Murals and the American Landscape

The Great Depression brings a new scale to her work through the WPA Federal Art Project. Lucile Blanch moves into the realm of public history, receiving commissions from the U.S. Treasury Department's Section of Fine Arts. Her brush reaches across states:

      • Florida: The 1938 mural Osceola Holding Informal Court with His Chiefs for the Fort Pierce Post Office.
      • Virginia: The work titled Appalachia, intended to highlight the beauty of the town's setting.
      • Mississippi: Large-scale narratives such as Rural Mississippi from Early Days to Present and further commissions in the state.
      • Kentucky: The depiction of Crossing to the Battle of Blue Licks.

While her murals capture historical and regional weight, her smaller works explore different textures. Her etchings and lithographs often lean toward the satirical, particularly in a series centered on the circus, drawing from childhood memories. Whether executing a massive wall painting or a delicate still life, her presence remains anchored in the physical reality of her surroundings.

      Legacy in Collection and Community

By the time she reaches her later years, her work is held in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. She remains a fixture of the Woodstock community, eventually returning there to live out her final years. Her career, spanning from the early twentieth-century modernism of the Fourteenth Street School to the mid-century era, is marked by a refusal to cease the daily practice of her craft until her death in 1981.
